Seen and Not Seen Publication.
As a student in the Publication Design course, I participated in creating the third volume of the Graphic Design and Photography publication Seen and Not Seen for the Graphic Design and Photography Department at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC). I served as a Co-Executive Director to develop the journal’s theme, artistic direction, and interior layouts in collaboration with publication editors and staff.

01 JOURNAL THEME AND ROLE
The theme for the third volume of Seen and Not Seen was Perception. As individuals, we carry a medley of experiences and memories that shape how we view our surrounding world. Our thoughts, likes and dislikes, and emotions shape this viewpoint to construct our personal realities. As a staff, we highlighted both external and internal forms of perception to explore the space between personal experience and individual perspective and belief.
As the Co-Executive Director, I collaborated with four other editors to develop the publication’s theme and artistic direction. I co-lead weekly editor meetings where I helped set priority tasks and deadlines to complete sections on schedule. Additionally, I participated in conversations to select the paper material and ink color used for the publication’s interior pages and on the cover. Before final submission to the printer, I facilitated the preparation of all primary files for the journal’s interior layouts.

02 INTERIOR LAYOUTS
To develop the interior layouts, I assisted with selecting and typesetting the typefaces used for the headers, featured artist statements, and image captions. Additionally, I designed the bracket motif we used to frame the artist statements and showcase the names of student artists. During proofing, I reviewed all layouts individually to ensure alignment of all page elements and the proper spelling of featured student artist names. I also made additional edits to guarantee cohesive formatting throughout the publication.

As part of the publication’s art direction, we took elements from the visual language used in different student artworks and expanded the language throughout their spread. The expansion contributed to the surreal, dreamlike personality of the publication and its theme. Additionally, by utilizing certain elements, we highlighted the individual creativity of each student artist while creating a unified aesthetic and dynamic moments throughout the publication.
